Will the Fed raise interest rates today? What does the Fed do anyway?

The Federal Reserve role includes:

  • Conducting the nation's monetary policy to promote maximum employment, stable prices, and moderate long-term interest rates in the U.S. economy.

  • Promoting the stability of the financial system and seeks to minimize and contain systemic risks through active monitoring and engagement in the U.S. and abroad.

  • Regulating the safety and soundness of individual financial institutions and monitors their impact on the financial system as a whole.

Given how some banks have had financial trouble lately, all eyes are on the Fed and their plans for interest rate hikes and bank financial stability. Press conference is at 2:30 E.T. March 22.
